Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) browser continued to lose market share in January, according to new figures highlighting the importance of ensuring website development targets all of the major browsers.
The latest data from Net Applications revealed that IE accounted for 67.55 per cent of the web browser market during the month, compared with 68.15 per cent in December.
Meanwhile, Firefox (21.53 per cent), Safari (8.29 per cent) and Chrome (1.12 per cent) all saw gains month-on-month.
Opera accounted for 0.7 per cent of the market, while Netscape took 0.57 per cent of the sector.
Ronald Carlson of Blorge.com commented that IE had been expected to add share in January as people went back to work after the Christmas break to offices predominately using Microsoft software, taking share from Firefox in the process.
"That obviously hasn't happened as ... Firefox [has] continued to add [share]," he remarked.
IE8 was taken out of beta last week and launched as a release candidate, which is expected to be largely the same as the final version.
